The Sherry K. Stone Foundation for a Cure is an organization dedicated to the funding for and of women’s cancer issues as well as research.
American women are affected by a wide range of cancer. Below are the numbers associated with various forms of the disease and current fatality rates:
· Breast cancer—The most common type of cancer among American women. The cause is still not known.
· Cervical cancer—Approx. 11,000 women diagnosed annually, over 3,700 will die
· Lung cancer—Approx. 98,000 women diagnosed annually, over 70,000 will die. Accounts for over 15% of all cancer diagnoses and 29% of all cancer deaths.
· Endometrial cancer—Most often occurs in women who have gone through menopause.
· Epithelial ovarian cancer—Accounts for 85-89% of ovarian cancers. Ranks fourth in cancer deaths among American women.
· Germ cell and stromal cell cancer—Accounts for 5-7% of all ovarian cancers. There is no known way to prevent this type of ovarian cancer.
· 3,490 American women are diagnosed with vulvar cance.
· Lung cancer will account for over 15% of all cancer diagnoses and over 29% of all cancer deaths. Over 98,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with lung cancer and over 70,000 of them will die.
